DFW Culture
Dallas Culture at its Best
With the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, Texas Rangers, and the Dallas Stars all calling the DFW Metroplex home, sports are an integral part of the Dallas culture. DFW is in elite company in the world of professional sports since it is one of only 13 metropolitan areas in the US that has a team in four major professional sports leagues. Also home to the Major League Soccer club, the FC Dallas Hoops, there's a team for everyone!
Football- The first team to take off their spurs in North Texas was the Dallas Cowboys in 1960. Nicknamed "America's Team," this NFL powerhouse has been world champions five times, with the last coming in 1995. The Cowboys play at Texas Stadium, with plans for a new stadium in the works for the DFW Metroplex.
Baseball- Next to join The Metroplex in 1972, was Major League Baseball's Texas Rangers. Fans flood The Ballpark, located in Arlington near Six Flags Over Texas. Many come to watch homeruns knocked out of the park in this "hitter-friendly park," so dubbed because of the comfortable weather of the Texas spring and relatively short fences.
Hockey- In 1993 the final professional team moved to Dallas-Fort Worth, the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League. Hockey in Texas? Suprisingly, the team won the Stanley Cup during the 1998-1999 season, after only five years of existence in the NHL. In the last ten years, the Stars have found themselves at the top of the food chain, joining the Detroit Red Wings and the New Jersey Devils in accumulating the most points.
Art and architecture also run deep in Dallas culture. The Dallas Arts District features Pritzker Prize winning architecture, making it stunning inside and out. Sites include the Crow Collection of Asian Art, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Dallas Museum of Art, Meyerson Symphony Center, Nasher Sculpture Center, and the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts.
The Fort Worth Cultural District is home to five wonderful museums in a relaxing, park-like setting. One of the newest museums is the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Also, throughout the city, you'll find museums devoted to Western heritage including the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, the Sid Richardson Collection and the Texas Cowboy Museum all portraying Fort Worth's rich cultural past. Other museums include the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, complete with an OMNI theater. With so much art being offered it's no wonder Fort Worth is considered "the museum capital of the Southwest."
